After much anticipation and years of waiting, the Land Rover Defender makes its return this September. Although the Defender won’t arrive at our dealership until January 2020, you can put down a refundable deposit now to be one of the first to drive a Defender off the lot.
To the delight of automotive enthusiasts worldwide, earlier this month at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany, Jaguar Land Rover unveiled the next generation of its rugged off-roader, the 2020 Land Rover Defender.
In 1997, Land Rover ceased sales of its classic Defender in the North American market. So it is fair to say, American Defender fans have been very patient and after this month’s reveal it is also fair to say it was well worth the wait.
The next generation 2020 Defender was road tested on over 745,000 miles of extreme terrain in harsh driving conditions, including the 122°F heat of the desert, the sub-40°F cold of the Arctic, and at an altitude of 10,000 feet in the Rocky Mountains. Additionally, it has completed more than 45,000 individual tests to ensure it is the toughest Land Rover ever made.
A fresh take on a classic SUV, the 2020 Defender is a uni-body, independent-suspension modern off-road adventurer that is available in two sizes—two-door and four-door—and provides [Continued] seating for up to eight. The all-new Defender offers:
- two gasoline engine options: a 300-horsepower 2.0L I4 and a 400-horsepower 3.0L I6 with a mild hybrid system
- class-leading 1,984 payload capacity and it can tow up to 8,201 lbs
- 3-foot-deep water-fording ability and 11.5 inches of ground clearance
- ClearSight Ground View that lets you essentially see through the hood of the vehicle
- 360-degree aerial view that lets you see all around the vehicle
- rearview camera that can be displayed in the rearview mirror, so you can backup without problems even when your cargo hold is filled to the brim
- up to three rows of heated seats
- advanced smart LED headlights
- standard air suspension and big wheels, as well as available coil suspension and 18-inch steel wheels
- available rubber flooring and flush door sills for easy cleaning
- and over 170 available individual accessories
Although it has been reimagined for the 21st century, the 2020 Defender retains some of its most recognizable good looks: clamshell hood, floating roof, vertical rear end, rear spare tire, and alpine windows.
